National Forest Week View Full Story Minimize
Yesterday, September 08, 2010 |
September 19 - 25, 2010 is National Forest Week.

Established circa in 1920 as Forest Fire Prevention Week, the intention was to encourage greater public awareness towards Canada's forests. At the time, there was no apparent shortage of trees for industrial expansion – the greatest threat came from forest fires, due mainly to human causes.

Since then National Forest Week, as it was renamed in 1967, has evolved to encompass the many and varied human and environmental aspects of Canada's forest resources – past, present and future.

In celebration of National Forest Week, the Trees for Tomorrow planting program will be giving away FREE White Spruce seedlings at various locations in the province. Come get your own FREE White Spruce seedling and celebrate.

Also another way to celebrate National Forest Week, is to take part a public tree planting at Fort Whyte Alive on Sunday September 19, 2010 at 10 am. Bring your shovel and help the planet by planting a tree.

Although special activities are promoted across Canada, National Forest Week remains first and foremost a challenge to individual Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource.
